So the question of whether CBD could do something in a rabbit is not the interesting one. The interesting question, and the one nobody writes about, is whether you can give a 900 gram animal a reliable dose out of a bottle built for a 25 kilogram dog.
Usually, you cannot. This page explains why that matters more than anything else on the subject.
The measurement problem
Here is the actual obstacle, stated plainly.
Consumer pet CBD tinctures are formulated for dogs and cats. A dropper is designed to deliver amounts appropriate for an animal weighing several kilograms upward. A rabbit is often under two kilograms. A guinea pig is around a kilogram. A hamster is well under two hundred grams.
You cannot reliably deliver a fraction of a drop. You can attempt it, and what you will actually deliver will vary from one attempt to the next by a proportion that would be irrelevant for a Labrador and is not irrelevant for a hamster.
That is not a reason to be vague about small animals. It is a specific, practical reason why the answer for most of them is “talk to an exotics vet about whether there is a sensible way to do this at all,” rather than “here is a dose chart.”
A vet can address this. A website cannot. An exotics vet can advise on whether dilution is appropriate, what to dilute with, and whether the whole exercise is worth it for your animal. That is a genuine veterinary question, not a formality we are hiding behind.
Why an exotics vet specifically
In veterinary practice, “exotic” means anything that is not a dog, cat or farm animal. That includes rabbits, which surprises a lot of rabbit owners.
The distinction matters because small mammal medicine is genuinely different. Rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents have digestive systems, drug sensitivities and disease patterns that a general small-animal practice may see rarely. Several drugs that are routine in dogs are dangerous in rabbits.
If your usual practice does not see many small mammals, ask for a referral before starting anything. It is worth the extra appointment.
The carrier oil question
This one is specific to small mammals and it is worth understanding.
A CBD tincture is CBD dissolved in an oil. For a dog, the oil is unremarkable. For some small mammals it is a genuine consideration, because their digestive systems are adapted to diets that contain very little fat.
Chinchillas are the clearest example. Their digestion is unusually intolerant of dietary fat, which makes an oil-based product a formulation question rather than only a dosing one.
Rabbits and guinea pigs are hindgut fermenters whose gut function depends on a high-fibre, low-fat diet, and whose digestive systems are notoriously easy to upset.
MCT oil (coconut-derived)
This is not a claim that any particular carrier will cause a problem. It is a reason the conversation belongs with a vet who knows the species rather than with a product page.
What the evidence looks like
Thin, and it is more honest to say so than to imply otherwise.
Dogs are the best-studied companion species for CBD. Cats are less studied. For rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and pet rodents, the published work is very limited indeed.
One genuine exception worth knowing. Rats and mice appear extensively in laboratory research, which means more is known about cannabinoid handling in those species than in almost any other small mammal. That research was not designed to tell you how to look after a pet rat, and it does not transfer straightforwardly, but it is not nothing.
What applies regardless of species
THC-free, with a certificate to prove it. Animals do not process THC the way people do, and the smaller the animal the less margin there is. Not “hemp-derived.” Not “under the legal limit.”

Contaminant screening matters more here than anywhere. Limits are generally set with an adult human in mind. A 900 gram rabbit receiving the same product is receiving a very different exposure per kilogram of body weight. Proof publishes Test results.
Never a human product. Concentration makes it unusable, and the ingredient list is not chosen with a small mammal in mind.
Get anything undiagnosed diagnosed first. This is more urgent in small mammals than in dogs and cats, because prey species conceal illness until they are very unwell. A rabbit that has stopped eating is an emergency, not a candidate for a supplement.

Ownership of each is illegal or permit-restricted in a meaningful number of US states, and opossums are wildlife rather than pets in nearly all of them.
