CBD for Hamsters, Gerbils, Rats and Mice

The honest answer for all four is the same, so they share a page.

They are mammals, so the mechanism is there. But at these body weights a consumer CBD tincture stops being a dosing problem and becomes an impossibility, and no amount of careful technique changes that.

The arithmetic that ends the conversation

A Syrian hamster weighs somewhere around 100 to 200 grams. A dwarf hamster is smaller. A mouse is around 20 to 40 grams. A gerbil sits between them. A pet rat is the largest of the four, and still a fraction of a small dog.

Consumer pet CBD tinctures are formulated for dogs and cats. The dropper is engineered to deliver amounts appropriate for an animal weighing several kilograms and upward.

Delivering an appropriate amount to a 30 gram mouse from that bottle is not a matter of being careful. The variation between one attempted fraction of a drop and the next is larger than the entire quantity you are trying to deliver. There is no technique that fixes this, and diluting at home introduces its own problems of accuracy, sterility and stability.

That is the answer, and it is a practical one rather than a claim about whether CBD does anything.

What the rodent research does and does not tell you

Worth addressing directly, because people find it and reasonably ask.

Rats and mice appear extensively in laboratory research, including cannabinoid research. More is published about how these species handle cannabinoids than about almost any other small mammal, and considerably more than about rabbits or chinchillas.

Three reasons that does not translate into guidance for your pet rat.

It was not designed to. Laboratory work uses specific strains, controlled conditions, precise laboratory-grade dosing equipment and research questions aimed at understanding a mechanism, often as a model for humans. None of that is a care protocol for a pet.

The delivery methods are not available to you. Research doses are measured with equipment a household does not have, and often delivered by routes a pet owner would not use.

More published data is not the same as evidence of benefit in a pet. Knowing a great deal about how a compound behaves in a laboratory rat tells you very little about whether giving it to your pet rat would help with anything.

What people are usually trying to solve

Most people arriving here are worried about something specific, and there are better answers than a supplement for each.

An older rat with a lump. Mammary and other tumours are extremely common in pet rats. This is a veterinary conversation, and in many cases a surgical one, and it is often more treatable than owners expect.

Respiratory noise in a rat or mouse. Respiratory disease is the other very common pet rodent problem. It needs veterinary treatment, and it is not a supplement situation.

A hamster that has become slow or is not using a limb. Needs examining. Small rodents hide illness and by the time it is visible it has usually been going on a while.

An animal at the end of its life. Pocket pets have short lives, and owners often reach a point where they want to do something. The right something is a conversation with a vet about comfort and about quality of life. That conversation is worth having, and it deserves better than a supplement bought in the hope it will help.

Why an exotics vet

All four species are exotics in veterinary terms. Their medicine differs substantially from dog and cat medicine, and doses of everything are calculated at scales a general practice may rarely work with.

If your usual practice does not see rodents, ask for a referral. And find one before you need it urgently, because these species deteriorate fast.

One legality note

Gerbils are prohibited in California and Hawaii. This is an agricultural rule concerning escaped colonies rather than a statement about the animal as a pet, and gerbils are sold in mainstream pet shops across the other states. If you are in California or Hawaii, they are not a legal pet.

What we are not going to do

We are not going to publish a dosing suggestion for a hamster, and we are not going to link a product from this page.

The bottle we make is for dogs and cats, it is not appropriate at these body weights, and pointing you at it here would contradict everything above. If somebody sells you a product promising to dose a mouse, ask them how the measurement works.

The short version

The short version

  • All four are mammals, so the mechanism exists.
  • At 20 to 200 grams, delivering a reliable amount from a pet tincture is not possible, and technique does not fix it.
  • The extensive laboratory rodent literature was not designed as pet care guidance and does not transfer.
  • Lumps in rats, respiratory noise, and sudden slowness are veterinary problems with real treatments.
  • Gerbils are illegal in California and Hawaii.
  • Find an exotics vet before you need one. These species deteriorate quickly.
