Roll-On vs Cream vs Patch: Which Format for Which Problem
Roll-On vs Cream vs Patch: Which Format for Which Problem
Topical CBD comes in three broad formats and they are not interchangeable. The right one depends on the size of the area, how long you need it, and whether you want to touch it.
| Roll-On | Cream or Balm | Patch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Targeted spots: neck, shoulder, knee, calf | Larger areas: lower back, thighs | Long, steady coverage in one place |
| Application | No hands, no residue | Massaged in, absorbs over a minute | Adhered, left in place |
| Duration | Reapply as needed | Reapply as needed | Hours, hands-off |
| On the go | Easiest, fits a bag, no mess | Needs hand-washing after | Awkward to apply mid-day |
Ice Hot is a roll-on because most everyday aches are localised. A sore shoulder is a small area you want to treat precisely, several times a day, without getting product on your hands before a meeting. The applicator does that.
Where to apply it
Apply directly to the area, not around it. Common spots:
- Neck and upper shoulders: for tension that builds through a working day
- Lower back: across the belt line, either side of the spine, not on the spine itself
- Knees: around the joint rather than on the kneecap
- Calves and feet: after running or a long day standing
- Elbows and forearms: for repetitive strain from a keyboard or a racquet
Avoid broken skin, and keep it away from your eyes. Wash your hands after applying near your face. If you use a heat pad, do not use it over the top of a menthol product.
The cooling arrives within a couple of minutes, and the warming follows. That is the menthol working on the temperature receptors in your skin, a fast, physical sensation that is separate from what the CBD is doing. Worth knowing so you are judging the product on the right basis. More in why use CBD topically.
