Ice Hot CBD Roll-On: Your Owner's Guide
Ice Hot CBD Roll-On is a topical: 1,000 mg of CBD per 30 ml bottle, in a base of menthol, camphor and botanical oils, with a rollerball so you can put it on without getting it on your hands. You roll it onto clean, dry skin, it feels cool within a minute or two, and then a gentle warmth follows. This guide covers how to apply it, how often the label allows, and the handful of things you should never do with a menthol and camphor product.
I formulate Proof's products, so I will be plain about what this page is and isn't. It is an owner's manual. It won't tell you what Ice Hot will do for you, because a topical is judged by how it feels where you put it, and that is personal. For the reasoning behind each ingredient, read what's inside our Ice Hot Roll-On; I won't repeat it here.

How to use it
The directions on the product are short:
- Apply to clean, dry skin.
- Hold the bottle upside down for more product, or at an angle for more control.
- The label says: "Repeat 2 to 3 times per day as needed."
- Avoid eyes, broken skin and sensitive areas.
- Let it absorb before you cover the area with clothing.
- Stop if irritation occurs.
Step by step, this is how I use it:
- Wash and dry the spot.
- Roll directly over the area, not around it. Neck and upper shoulders, calves, forearms and the lower back (either side of the spine) are the common spots people tell us about.
- Start with a thin layer. You can add a second pass; you can't take one back.
- Wait for it to absorb before you pull on a shirt or socks.
- Wash your hands if you touched the formula, and always before touching your eyes, face or contact lenses. This is standard practice with any menthol and camphor topical.
- Space your applications so you stay within the label's 2 to 3 times a day.
The cooling, then warming, sensation
The first thing you feel is menthol. It acts on the temperature-sensing receptors in your skin, so the area feels cold even though its temperature hasn't dropped. Camphor, clove and the other botanicals bring the warm phase that follows. That shift from ice to heat is the "Ice Hot" in the name.
Two things are worth knowing. First, the sensation comes from the menthol and camphor, not the CBD, so judge the CBD part of the product separately. Second, the intensity varies from person to person and from spot to spot.
What should not happen: burning that keeps building, redness that spreads, swelling or blisters. The FDA noted in a 2012 safety communication that menthol, methyl salicylate and capsaicin skin products "produce a local sensation of warmth or coolness" and should not cause skin damage (FDA). If you see signs like these, wash the area with soap and water, stop using the product and get medical advice.
Your first two weeks
Before the first real use, do a patch test. Roll a small stripe on the inside of your forearm and check it over the next day. Botanical oils, menthol and camphor are common irritants for reactive skin, and in the rare burn cases the FDA reviewed, many happened after a single application, within 24 hours (FDA).
After that, use it the same way for a week or two before you decide anything:
- Keep to one spot and one routine. For example, after a walk and again before bed.
- Keep a simple log. Where you applied it, how much, what you felt and for how long, and any skin reaction.
- Stay within the label. Up to 3 times a day, and the label doesn't suggest more product per pass, so don't pile it on.
- Change one thing at a time. If you also start new drops the same week, you won't know which one you are noticing.
Our guide to your first 30 days with CBD has a log template you can copy.
Getting the most from each bottle
- Consistency beats quantity. A thin layer, applied the same way each time, tells you more than a heavy one now and then.
- Timing is up to you. Some people like it before activity, others after or at the end of the day. Pick one and stick with it while you learn how it feels.
- Store it upright with the cap on, away from sun and heat. A hot car or a sunny windowsill is hard on the CBD and on the menthol. More in does CBD oil expire?
Using it with drops. Some people pair a topical with an oral product: Ice Hot for a particular spot, and CBD Comfort Drops as part of the day. They are used differently, so they don't replace each other. The Relief & Recovery Bundle ($60) packs the two together. If you take drops, the safety notes below apply to them in full.
Safety notes
Never use heat or tight wraps over it. In its 2012 safety communication, the FDA reported rare cases of first- to third-degree chemical burns from over-the-counter skin products containing menthol, methyl salicylate or capsaicin. It advised: "do not bandage the area tightly and do not apply local heat (heating pads, lamps, hot water in bags or bottles)" (FDA). Ice Hot contains menthol, so the same caution applies: no heating pad, hot water bottle, heat lamp, compression wrap or bandage over the area. I would add a hot tub or sauna straight after applying to that list.
Eyes, broken skin, mucous membranes. Keep it off cuts, scrapes, sunburn, rashes and freshly shaved skin, and away from your eyes, nose, mouth and genitals. The FDA gives the same advice for these products.
Children and pets. Proof products are for adults: our site states you must be 18 or older to purchase or use them. Store the bottle out of reach. Camphor is dangerous if swallowed; Poison Control says even a small amount can be, and that seizures can begin within minutes (Poison Control). If a child swallows any, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 right away.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The FDA "strongly advises against the use of cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and marijuana in any form during pregnancy or while breastfeeding" (FDA). Talk to your clinician before using any CBD product, topicals included.
Medications. If you take prescription medication, ask your clinician or pharmacist before adding CBD in any form. Our post on CBD and prescription medication explains why.
Drug tests. The finished-product lab report for Ice Hot shows total THC not detected. If you are tested, read does CBD show up on a drug test? before you decide.
Driving and alcohol. These questions matter most if you also take CBD by mouth. Read can you drive after taking CBD? and CBD and alcohol. The full list of our safety posts is on the CBD safety page.
Travel, storage and the bottle
- The applicator. Ice Hot uses a rollerball, not the child-resistant dropper cap on our drops. Close it firmly after each use so it doesn't leak in a bag, and keep it somewhere children can't reach.
- Flying. TSA allows liquids, gels and creams in carry-on bags in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, packed in one quart-sized bag (TSA). The 30 ml bottle is under that limit. For the rest of the trip, see our tips for traveling with CBD.
- Shelf life. Keep it cool and out of direct sun, and follow the expiry date printed on the box (the batch number is there too, so keep the box). If it smells rancid or looks different from when you bought it, replace it.
Refills, subscriptions and returns
Subscribe & Save. Ice Hot is 15% off on a monthly subscription ($29.75 an order) or 5% off every 2 to 3 months. Orders under $60, including single-bottle subscription orders, pay shipping. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method within 10 business days. To start, contact us with your order number. We ship within the US only, and not to Montana (shipping policy).
FAQ
Is the cooling feeling the CBD?
No. The cold comes from menthol and the warmth from camphor and the botanicals. The CBD doesn't produce that sensation.
Can I use a heating pad after applying it?
No. The FDA warns against heat or tight bandages over menthol skin products because of rare but serious burns. Let it absorb and leave the area uncovered or loosely covered.
How often can I apply it?
The label says: "Repeat 2 to 3 times per day as needed." Stop if irritation occurs.
Can I use it on my face or neck?
The neck is fine; keep well clear of your eyes, nose and mouth, and don't use it on your face. Wash your hands before touching your eyes.
Can I use it on my dog or cat?
No. Ice Hot is made for people. Menthol, camphor and the essential oils in it are not formulated for animals. Talk to your veterinarian about any product for a pet; our Pets CBD Drops guide covers our pet product.
