Pup Cup Recipe: A Sweet Treat for My Sweet Old Pup
Share
You’ve probably seen the “pup cup” craze—those tiny cups of whipped cream handed out at coffee shop drive-thrus, made famous by Starbucks. Dogs go wild for them, and it’s easy to see why: it’s creamy, cool, and just the right size for a tail-wagging indulgence.
Recently, I decided to whip up my own homemade version of a pup cup for my dog, Sagan (Check out the video reel here!) At 13 years old, Sagan’s not exactly into bones or crunchy treats anymore. He doesn’t have many teeth left, and he’s always been more of a creamy, soft texture kind of guy anyway. Plus, this recipe lets me make a batch ahead of time so I’ve got plenty on hand for when he’s being especially good (or just especially cute—which is often).
But this isn’t just any whipped cream. I added a little CBD to the mix—specifically our Proof Pets CBD Drops, which contain only MCT oil (from coconuts) and broad-spectrum hemp extract. It’s formulated for pets, but yes, humans can absolutely enjoy it too. And spoiler: I did.
Why CBD for Dogs?
I started giving Sagan CBD regularly after he began experiencing occasional limping in his front left leg. His vet suggested trying anti-inflammatories, but warned they could carry a risk of liver damage and would require routine bloodwork to monitor. When I asked about CBD, he was open-minded—he said if it worked and didn’t cause any side effects, he’d support us using it.
So I started giving Sagan three drops of our Proof Pets CBD Drops with each meal. His limp episodes, which used to last for weeks, now resolve within hours. He rarely has them at all anymore. The anti-inflammatory prescription is still in the cabinet, untouched.
The Pup Cup Recipe
Whipped cream is surprisingly quick and easy to make from scratch. I don’t always keep heavy whipping cream on hand, but I had a little leftover from a recent recipe—perfect for this! Here's what I used:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar
- 0.75ml Proof Pets CBD Drops (about 15mg of CBD)
-
½ tsp vanilla extract
Note: This recipe makes about 2 cups of whipped cream—way more than Sagan should eat in one go. I added 3–4x his usual dose of CBD so that the little bit he eats has just a little bit to boost his dose. Just remember to portion appropriately for your pup!
How to Make It (Tips Included!)
- Keep it cold - Cold cream whips best, so I chilled my metal mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the fridge while I measured out ingredients.
- Mix it up - I used a KitchenAid mixer, but a hand mixer works just as well. Add all your ingredients to the chilled bowl, and start mixing on low (to avoid splashing), gradually increasing speed as the cream thickens.
- Watch for soft peaks - You’ll know it’s ready when the whipped cream just starts to hold its shape—soft, fluffy, and dreamy. Don’t overmix!
- Serve it cute - I piped some into a mini ice cream cone for Sagan, which made for an adorable presentation. You can also spoon it into a bowl if your dog prefers less flair.
A Treat for Me, Too
After Sagan had his moment, I saved the rest of the whipped cream for dessert. It's strawberry season here, so I sliced up some berries, tossed them with a little sugar, and let them macerate while I wrapped up my day. A few hours later, I had the perfect summer treat waiting: juicy strawberries with homemade CBD whipped cream.
Sagan slept like a rock, and I fell asleep blissed out and relaxed. I’d call that a win for both of us.
