What Does 1000mg Actually Mean in a CBD Topical?

You are looking at two CBD roll-ons. One says 500mg, one says 1000mg, and the 1000mg one costs a few dollars more. The choice looks obvious.

It is not, and the reason is that almost nobody explains what that number is measuring.

The number is for the whole bottle, not the application

On a CBD topical, the milligram figure on the front of the package is the total amount of CBD in the entire container. It is not how much you get in one pass across your knee.

This is different from how the number works on a tincture, where brands usually give you both a bottle total and a per-dose amount, and different again from how you think about a pill, where the number on the box is the number you swallow.

So a 1000mg roll-on does not put 1000mg of CBD on your skin. It puts some fraction of it there, and the fraction depends on how much product comes out of the applicator and how big an area you cover. How to read a CBD label

Every CBD product on a shelf is required to state how much CBD is in it, but there is no standard for which number that has to be, and brands get to choose the one that looks best.

Total milligrams is the number on the front of nearly every topical, and it is the total CBD across the whole container, exactly as the section above describes. It is the easiest number to print, because it does not depend on how the product ends up being used, only on how it was made.

Milligrams per dose shows up on tinctures and capsules far more often than on topicals, because those formats come with a built-in unit: a dropper marked to a specific volume, or a fixed capsule. A topical has no equivalent unit. You do not apply “one dose” of a roll-on, you apply however much comes out in a pass across your knee, which is a large part of why this number rarely appears on a topical label at all.

Milligrams per milliliter is the number that actually describes strength, and it is almost never printed anywhere on the package. It tells you how concentrated the product is, independent of how big the container happens to be or how much you personally use per application.

Brands lead with total milligrams for a fairly plain reason: a bigger number reads as a stronger product at a glance, and most shoppers are comparing bottles side by side for a few seconds rather than doing division in the aisle. A 3000mg bottle looks like it beats a 1000mg bottle. Whether it actually does depends entirely on a number that is not printed on either label.

Which means bottle size changes everything

Here is the part that makes strength comparisons genuinely misleading.

If one brand puts 1000mg into a large bottle and another puts 1000mg into a small one, the small one is more concentrated. Same headline number, meaningfully different products. You are getting more CBD per swipe from the smaller bottle and fewer total swipes out of it.

The comparison that actually means something is milligrams per milliliter, and you almost never see it printed. You can work it out yourself:

total mg on the label ÷ bottle volume in mL = mg per mL

Do that for both products before you decide one is stronger than the other. A 1000mg bottle at twice the volume of a 500mg bottle is the same concentration, sold in a bigger package.

Here is what that looks like with real numbers. A 1000mg roll-on in a 30mL bottle works out to roughly 33mg per mL. The same 1000mg total in a 120mL bottle works out to roughly 8mg per mL, about a quarter as concentrated, even though the label on the front says the identical thing. Pick between those two using the total number alone and you would walk away assuming they were interchangeable, when the amount actually landing on your skin per pass differs by a factor of four.

This is exactly why bottle volume matters as much as the milligram figure on the front, and why a brand that does not publish its bottle volume anywhere is handing you half of a comparison and asking you to trust the rest.

Why more milligrams is not automatically better on skin

With an oral product, more CBD in the dose means more CBD available to your system, up to a point. Skin does not work that way, for two reasons.

Skin is a barrier by design. The outer layer exists to keep things out. Loading more cannabinoid into a formula does not automatically get more of it through, because the limit is usually the barrier rather than the supply. Past a certain concentration you are adding cost, not effect.

A topical is doing more than one job. A well-built topical is a delivery system. The carrier oils, the emulsifiers, and the penetration-supporting ingredients determine how much of anything reaches past the surface. Two products with identical CBD numbers and different formulations are not equivalent, and the formulation is the part nobody puts on the front of the box.

This is where the ingredient list earns more of your attention than the milligram figure. How to compare two topicals in about ninety seconds

  1. Get both concentrations. Total mg divided by volume. If a brand does not publish the volume anywhere, that is information too.

  2. Read the full ingredient list. Look for what is doing the sensory work (menthol, camphor) and what is carrying the formula. A short list of things you can identify beats a long list of things you cannot.

  3. Find the lab results. Third-party testing tells you the CBD number on the front is real. Without a certificate of analysis, the milligram figure is a marketing claim, and comparing two unverified claims is not comparison shopping. Proof publishes batch test results so you can check the potency yourself before buying.

  4. Check the applicator. A roll-on, a pump, and a jar meter out very different amounts. This determines how long the bottle lasts more than the mg number does.

  5. Ignore price per bottle. Use price per mg. Divide the price by total milligrams and compare that instead.

What a certificate of analysis actually tells you

A certificate of analysis, usually shortened to COA, is the lab report confirming what is actually in a given production run, as opposed to what the label claims. Credible brands test through independent, ISO-accredited labs rather than in-house, since a lab with no financial stake in the result is the entire point of testing at all.

When you pull up a COA, the first thing worth checking is the total cannabinoid content measured against the label claim. A result that comes in meaningfully under the labeled amount means you are paying for a concentration you are not actually getting, which undercuts the entire mg-per-mL comparison before you even reach the math. Some COAs also list contaminant screening, covering things like pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. That is a separate question from potency, but checking it once is a reasonable way to judge whether a brand’s testing is thorough or just a potency figure produced for marketing.

So is 1000mg the right number to look for?

For a topical you are applying to a knee, a shoulder, or a lower back, a 1000mg bottle at a normal roll-on size is a genuinely potent product rather than a token amount. That is the range worth shopping in.

What you should not do is treat 2000mg as automatically twice as good, or assume a 500mg product is half as effective. Once you are in a reasonable concentration range, formulation quality, ingredient transparency, and verified testing separate products far more than the headline number does.

Does 1000mg mean 1000mg goes into my body? No. It is the total in the bottle, and topicals are designed to act at the site of application rather than throughout the body.

How much CBD am I getting per application? No brand can give you an exact figure, because it depends on how much product you dispense and how far you spread it. This is why concentration matters more than the bottle total.

Is a 1000mg topical stronger than a 1000mg tincture? They are not comparable. They are different delivery routes doing different things, and the same number in each means something different.

Why do brands print the bottle total instead of the concentration? Because a bigger number sells better. There is no rule requiring concentration on the front of a CBD topical, so most brands lead with the figure that looks strongest.

What should I check if a brand does not list the volume? Look on the back label or the lab certificate, both of which usually state net contents. If you cannot find it in either place, you cannot compare that product on strength, and it is reasonable to shop elsewhere.
