CBD Subscription vs One-Time Purchase: Which Should You Choose?

Should you subscribe to CBD or buy once? When each makes sense, what to check in subscription terms, and how to match delivery cadence to your servings.

Buy once when you are trying a CBD product for the first time. Subscribe when you already know a product fits your routine and you use it at a steady pace. A subscription saves money and saves you from running out, but it only pays off if the delivery schedule matches how fast you actually finish a bottle.

The rest is detail, and the detail is where subscriptions go right or wrong: how easy it is to skip or cancel, whether the price can change, and whether the cadence you pick matches the serving size on the label. This guide covers what to check in any brand's subscription terms and how to work out the right cadence with simple math.

We make and sell CBD, and we offer a subscription ourselves, so weigh our view with that in mind. The checks below apply to any brand.

When a one-time purchase makes more sense

A first bottle is an experiment. You are finding out whether you like the taste, whether the format fits your day, and whether the product earns a place in your routine. That is a poor moment to commit to recurring deliveries, for three reasons:

  • You do not know your pace yet. You may use it daily, or you may find it is an evening-only product.
  • You may want to compare. Trying a tincture and a topical, or two strengths, is easier one bottle at a time.
  • Return policies often favor first purchases. Many opened-product guarantees are limited to your first order of a product, which fits a one-time trial well.

A one-time purchase also makes sense for anything you use occasionally, such as a roll-on you reach for after a long hike, or for a gift. (Buying for someone else? See our guide to buying CBD for someone else.)

When a subscription makes sense

A subscription is a convenience and a discount for something you already rely on. It tends to fit when:

  • You have used the product for a few weeks and plan to keep using it.
  • You use it on a predictable schedule, such as the same serving each evening.
  • The discount is meaningful and the terms let you change your mind easily.

If you are still adjusting how much or how often you use a product, wait. A subscription built around a guess tends to leave you with a stockpile or a gap.

What to check in any brand's subscription terms

Read the subscription page, the product page and the checkout screen before you agree. Here is a checklist:

Term What to look for Why it matters
Cancel Online, self-serve, no fee, no minimum number of orders Some subscriptions require a set number of deliveries first
Skip and pause Can you skip one shipment or pause for a month? Useful when you travel or have a bottle left over
Cadence options Several intervals, and changeable at any time Your pace may change after the first month
Price Is the discount stated per cadence? Can the price change, and will you be told first? A discount that shrinks later is a common surprise
Shipping Is shipping included on subscription orders? A small order can fall below a free-shipping threshold
Returns Do guarantees apply to repeat shipments? Opened-product guarantees are often first-purchase only

There is a legal floor, too. Under the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, a seller charging you through an online "negative option" (a recurring charge that continues unless you act) must clearly disclose all material terms before taking your billing information, get your express informed consent before charging you, and provide "simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges" (15 U.S.C. 8403, checked 25 September 2026). That is a minimum, not a guarantee that every subscription is easy to leave, so read the terms anyway. Be especially wary of "free trial" offers that quietly turn into a subscription; our guide to buying CBD online safely covers those.

How to work out the right cadence from the label

This is the step that makes or breaks a subscription, and it takes one line of math:

Days per bottle = servings per bottle รท servings you take per day

You need two numbers from the label: how many servings the bottle holds, and the serving size or direction. Then compare the result with the delivery intervals on offer and pick the one that is equal to or a little longer than your actual pace. If you land between two intervals, pick the longer one and skip or add an order as needed.

A worked example with our own drops, which hold 30 servings per bottle:

How you use CBD Comfort Drops (0.5 ml serving) Days one bottle lasts Closest delivery interval
Once a day 30 days Every month
Twice a day 15 days Every 2 weeks
Most days, with some days off More than 30 days Every 6 weeks

Comfort Drops list a label direction of 0.5 ml once or twice daily, so the math follows the label. For a topical, there is no fixed serving count, so track how long your first bottle lasts and use that. For pet products, the right amount depends on your animal's size and your veterinarian's advice, so let a first bottle tell you your pace before subscribing.

How Proof's Subscribe & Save works

Here are our terms exactly as they stand on our Subscribe & Save page as of 25 September 2026:

  • Savings: "save up to 15%." The discount depends on the product and the cadence.
  • Comfort Drops, Sleepy Drops and Pet Drops: 15% off every 2 weeks ($29.75 an order), 10% off every month ($31.50), 5% off every 6 weeks. The one-time price is $35.
  • Ice Hot Roll-On: 15% off every month, 5% off every 2 to 3 months.
  • Bundles: not available on subscription. Our two bundles already include $10 of savings, about 15% off.
  • Control: no commitment. You can modify products, change the delivery frequency, skip a shipment, pause or cancel through the Customer Account Portal, free of charge.

Notice what the tiers reward: the deepest discount on drops goes to the shortest interval. That suits someone using two servings a day. If you use one serving a day, a two-week cadence would send you a new bottle while half the last one is still full, so the monthly tier is the better match even at the smaller discount.

Two other points to weigh. Free shipping applies to orders over $60, and subscription orders under $60 pay shipping, so a single-bottle subscription includes a shipping charge; add it to the per-order price when you compare. And our 30-day money-back guarantee for opened products is limited to your first-time order of a specific product and covers a maximum of one unit, so repeat subscription shipments are not covered by it. Unopened items in their original, tamper-evident packaging can still be returned within 30 days of delivery for the full purchase price plus sales tax, minus the cost of the return label (typically around $5). Our guide to what to look for in a CBD money-back guarantee walks through the full policy.

FAQ

Is a CBD subscription worth it?

It can be, if you already use the product on a steady schedule and the terms let you skip, pause and cancel easily. For a first bottle, a one-time purchase is usually the better choice.

How do I pick a delivery frequency?

Divide the servings per bottle by the servings you take per day. That tells you how many days a bottle lasts. Choose the interval that matches or runs slightly longer than that number.

Can I cancel a CBD subscription anytime?

It depends on the brand. Federal law requires a simple way to stop recurring online charges, but some subscriptions still carry minimums or fees. Read the terms before you subscribe.

Should I subscribe to a product I have never tried?

We would not. Try one bottle first, learn your pace, and check how the return policy handles a first purchase before you commit to repeat deliveries.
