A "30-day money-back guarantee" can mean very different things from one CBD brand to the next. Some only refund sealed products you send back. Some refund opened bottles but keep a fee. Some start the clock on the day you order, others on the day it arrives. Read six details before you buy: opened vs unopened, fees, who pays return shipping, when the window starts, limits per product, and what happens to sales tax.
The headline on a banner is not the policy. The policy is the page linked in the site footer, usually called "Refund policy" or "Returns," and it is worth two minutes before checkout, especially for a product you have never tried.
We sell CBD and offer a guarantee of our own, so weigh our view with that in mind. The checklist below works for any brand, and we use our own policy as a worked example, including its limits.
Why CBD return policies differ so much
Unlike a sweater, an opened bottle of CBD oil cannot be resold. That shapes every policy. Some brands simply do not accept opened items. Others accept that a first bottle is a trial and refund it anyway, often with a fee and some limits to keep the offer from being abused.
The FTC's consumer advice is a useful baseline: "Many stores will not take returns or exchanges after a certain time, like 30 or 90 days," and it suggests looking for return policies, deadlines and customer service numbers on receipts, packaging or the seller's website before you have a problem (FTC, September 2024). In other words, the terms are largely set by the seller, so reading them is on you.
The six details to read in any CBD refund policy
| Detail | What to look for | Question to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Opened vs unopened | Does the refund cover a bottle you have tried? | Will I realistically know if I like it without opening it? |
| Fees | Restocking fee, processing fee, return label cost | How much of the price actually comes back? |
| Return shipping | Who pays, and do you have to send it back at all? | Is a return label deducted from my refund? |
| When the clock starts | Order date, ship date or delivery date | If shipping takes a week, how many days do I really have? |
| Limits | First purchase only, one unit, one claim per customer | Does this cover the second bottle, or a subscription renewal? |
| Tax and shipping | Is sales tax refunded? Original shipping? | Which parts of my payment are non-refundable? |
Two more details are worth a glance: how long the refund takes once approved, and whether damaged or wrong items are handled separately (they usually should be, at no cost to you).
Opened vs unopened: the detail that matters most
For a first CBD purchase, the opened-product rule is the one that decides whether the guarantee means anything. You cannot judge the taste, the format or how it fits your routine through a sealed box. A policy that only refunds unopened items protects you from ordering the wrong thing, not from the product being a poor fit.
When a brand does refund opened products, read the conditions carefully. Common ones include:
- A fixed fee kept from the refund.
- No return needed (because the brand cannot resell it), or a required return at your cost.
- A limit to the first purchase of a given product.
- A cap of one unit, so a multi-bottle order is only partly covered.
None of those conditions is unreasonable. They just need to be stated plainly, so you know what you are agreeing to.
Subscriptions and multi-bottle orders
Subscriptions deserve a separate look. If a guarantee only covers first-time purchases, repeat shipments of the same product may not qualify for an opened-product refund. Check whether the policy mentions subscription orders, and how to cancel before the next charge. Online sellers of recurring charges must, by federal law, disclose the material terms, get your express consent, and provide "simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges" (15 U.S.C. 8403, checked 25 September 2026). Our guide to CBD subscriptions vs one-time purchases covers the rest.
For multi-bottle orders and bundles, check whether the guarantee is per unit or per order. A one-unit cap means you can try one bottle and still be refunded, but not the rest of a stack you opened.
A worked example: how Proof's guarantee works
Here is our policy exactly as it reads on our refund policy page as of 25 September 2026. We call it our "No Regrets" 30-day money-back guarantee, and the 30 days run from the date your order is delivered.
| Situation | Send it back? | What you get back | What is kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unopened, in original tamper-evident packaging | Yes, with a prepaid label we provide | Full purchase price plus sales tax | Cost of the return label (typically around $5) |
| Opened or used | No; keep, donate or dispose of it | Full purchase price | $5 processing fee; sales tax is not refunded |
| Damaged, defective or wrong item | Contact us right away with photos | Replacement, or a full refund including all taxes and shipping | Nothing |
The limits matter, so here they are without softening:
- The opened-product guarantee is limited to first-time purchases of a specific product and covers a maximum of one unit. If you open two bottles of the same drops, one is covered. If you have bought a product before, a later bottle of it is not covered as an opened return. That includes repeat subscription shipments.
- A change-of-mind refund costs you about $5 either way: the return label on unopened items (typically around $5), the $5 processing fee on opened ones.
- Sales tax is not refunded on opened items that are not sent back.
To start a claim, email us with your order number and a short note on which items and why (reach us through our contact page). Once a request is approved, and unopened items have arrived back with us, the refund goes to your original payment method within 10 business days; your bank may take longer to post it. If you received Proof as a gift, you can start the claim yourself; in that case the refund is issued as store credit (a gift card).
Is that a generous policy? We think it is a fair one for a product that cannot be resold, but you can judge it against the checklist above like any other.
If a seller will not honor its policy
Start with the seller: describe the problem and the resolution you want, and keep your receipts and emails. If you paid by credit card and the issue is a billing error, such as a charge for something not delivered as agreed, the FTC says your dispute letter should reach the card issuer "within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you." And if an online order simply never ships, the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule requires sellers to ask for your consent to a delay and refund you promptly if you cancel instead.
A clear, specific policy is also a quality signal in its own right. Our guide to the best questions to ask a CBD brand includes return terms alongside lab reports and sourcing.
FAQ
Do CBD money-back guarantees cover opened bottles?
Some do and some do not. Many brands only refund unopened items. Brands that refund opened bottles often keep a fee and limit the offer to a first purchase or one unit, so read the policy page.
When does a 30-day guarantee start?
It depends on the brand. Some count from the order date and some from delivery. Ours runs from the date the order is delivered.
Is sales tax refunded on a CBD return?
It varies. Under our policy, tax is refunded on unopened items sent back and not refunded on opened items you keep.
Does a money-back guarantee cover subscription orders?
Check the wording. If a guarantee covers only first-time purchases of a product, repeat subscription shipments of that product may not qualify for an opened-product refund.
