What Are Terpenes, and Do They Actually Do Anything?

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give plants their smell. Pine smells like pine because of pinene. Lavender smells like lavender because of linalool. Citrus peel smells like citrus because of limonene. Hemp contains well over a hundred of them, and they are the reason a broad-spectrum extract smells like something rather than nothing.

That much is uncontroversial. What terpenes do in a hemp product — beyond smell and taste — is one of the most oversold subjects in this industry, and it is worth being straight about where the evidence stands.

We test for what is in our products and publish the results per batch. This article is about what those compounds are and what can honestly be said about them.

The common terpenes in hemp

If you have ever noticed that two hemp extracts smell noticeably different, the terpene profile is usually why. It is also why a broad-spectrum extract tastes like a plant and an isolate tastes like almost nothing.

The entourage effect, honestly

The "entourage effect" is the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than separately — that a whole-plant extract does something an isolated compound cannot.

It is a plausible hypothesis with a real mechanistic basis. It is not a settled finding, and the industry talks about it as though it were.

Here is the actual state of play. A 2021 paper in Scientific Reports found that certain cannabis terpenes are cannabimimetic and can selectively enhance cannabinoid activity — evidence in favour. A 2020 study found that terpenoids from cannabis do not mediate an entourage effect by acting at cannabinoid receptors — evidence against, at least by that mechanism. A comprehensive 2024 review concluded that while exploratory research suggests terpenes influence the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids, the potential for synergistic or additive enhancement remains unproven and further clinical trials are needed.

So: an open question with results pointing in both directions, and no confirmed clinical entourage effect in humans.

There is one specific finding worth knowing because it cuts against the marketing. Myrcene has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties applied topically — but in combination with CBD, it did not show a significant additional difference. That is the shape of a lot of this research: individual terpenes are interesting on their own, and the combination claim is the one that keeps failing to demonstrate itself.

What is actually claimed about individual terpenes

Exploratory research has associated specific terpenes with specific effects — myrcene with relaxation, linalool with sleep, limonene with analgesia, caryophyllene with cold tolerance and pain response.

Two caveats that matter more than the list:

"Exploratory" is doing real work in that sentence. Much of this is preclinical, in cell models or animals, often at concentrations far above what you would encounter in a consumer product.

Concentration is the whole game. The amount of any single terpene in a few drops of a hemp tincture is very small. Attributing a felt effect to a trace quantity of one terpene is not a claim the evidence supports. If you find lavender relaxing, you are more likely responding to the smell — which is a real and well-documented pathway, just not the one being sold.

What we will and will not say

We put this plainly because the alternative is the vague language that makes this category hard to trust.

We will say: terpenes are why our extract smells and tastes like hemp. They are naturally present in the plant and preserved by our extraction. We test for what is in the bottle and publish it.

We will not say: that the terpenes in our products produce a specific therapeutic effect, or that an entourage effect in our formulation has been demonstrated. It has not, in ours or anyone's.

If a brand tells you their terpene profile is engineered for a particular outcome, ask what evidence supports that at the concentration in the bottle. It is a fair question and it does not usually get a good answer.

Terpenes, and why "broad spectrum" means something

Where terpenes genuinely matter for a buying decision is in what they tell you about the extract.

An isolate is CBD and nothing else — no terpenes, no minor cannabinoids. Broad spectrum retains the wider plant profile including terpenes and minor cannabinoids, with THC removed. Full spectrum retains everything, including trace THC.

Proof products are broad spectrum: the plant profile is preserved, and THC is removed. The honest argument for that is not a proven entourage effect. It is that you get more of the plant than an isolate gives you, without the THC — which matters if you are subject to drug testing or simply do not want it.

Frequently asked questions

Are terpenes psychoactive? Not in the intoxicating sense. Aromatic compounds can influence mood through smell, which is a genuine effect and a different one.

Do terpenes show up on a drug test? No. Drug tests screen for THC metabolites.

Does an isolate work less well than broad spectrum? There is no confirmed clinical evidence that the difference produces different outcomes. It is a reasonable preference; it is not a demonstrated fact.

Can I add terpenes to my CBD oil? We would not recommend buying isolated terpenes to add to a finished product. They are potent, some are skin and mucosal irritants at concentration, and you would be dosing blind.
